Elected to the board, some of my goals are to increase adoption of open source within federal and state governments, foster open source within academic contexts, and better promote awareness of the open source definition. I offer fresh perspective, energy, hands-on experience, and a deep passion for open source.

3 +(% style="font-size: 14px;" %)Elected to the board, my main goal is to expand open source within government and academia by cultivating the social and legal constructs necessary for those domains to thrive. I offer a deep passion for open source, hands-on experience, and fresh perspective.

4 -**About me**
5 5
6 -I'm a research scientist with more than 20 years experience working with academia, government, and commercial industry. My primary areas of expertise and research include open source strategy and project management, software development, code hardening, computer graphics, and government open source licensing. I have particularly extensive background managing and promoting open source in international federal government contexts and am an actively involved within the Military Open Source Software (Mil-OSS) community.
7 7
8 -// I'm intimately familiar with open source.//
7 +(% style="font-size: 14px;" %)**Promoting Non-Commercial Open Source**
9 9
10 -In addition to CAD, I'm also contributor to a number of other open source projects including BZFlag, Haiku, Mediawiki, FTGL, FreeBSD, and others. I've authored articles for the Open Source Business Resource, given technical talks on open source to the U.S. National Research Council, and generally promote open source at every opportunity. I tirelessly worked for 5+ years to get BRL-CAD released as open source software. Along the way and at a time when legal opinion was hard to come by, I became intimately familiar with particulars of free and open source software licensing, U.S. government regulations, international copyright issues, and common misconceptions about open source common among managers and developers alike.
9 +I'm a federal government research scientist with more than 20 years experience working with governments, academia, and commercial industry. Most people know me as Sean and the guy behind BRL-CAD. In 1998, I began a 5+ year journey navigating details of open source licensing, international copyright issues, US federal regulations, and government politics to get one of the world's oldest software codes released as open source. I have particularly extensive background managing and promoting open source in international contexts. Elected to the board, I will leverage my experience to help expand the adoption of open source by academia and federal, state, and local agencies around the world.

11 +// I believe there is exceptional and untapped opportunity for promoting open source in the public service sectors.//
13 13
14 -Some stats just for fun, Ohloh indicates I've sustained π (pi) commits per day to open source over the past 15 years ranking me in the top 0.085%. I love open source. It's a better way to develop software and build communities.
15 15
16 -// With me, you get hands-on experience.//
17 17
18 -My education is a B.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University and am an active professional member and supporter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), International Game Developers Association (IGDA), and Solid Modeling Association (SMA). I grew up and have lived around the world, speak multiple languages, and am proficient in 20+ programming languages. I am currently pursuing a masters, a single malt Scotch zealot, a rower (crew), a coach (crew and STEM), a culinarian, a woodworker, and a dad.

20 -// I embrace community and communication, living with balance and harmony.//
17 +As a supporter of meritocratic processes and choosing to lead by example, (% style="font-size: 14px;" %)I'm an avid contributor to a number of notable open source projects including BRL-CAD, BZFlag, Haiku, FreeBSD, RTEMS, and others. I've authored articles for the Open Source Business Resource, given technical talks to the U.S. National Research Council, and promote open source at every opportunity. My primary areas of expertise and research include open source strategy, project management, software development, code hardening, and licensing. Ohloh stats indicate I've made at least 17k commits to open source, ranking my activity in the top 0.1% of all open source developers.

19 +(% style="font-size: 14px;" %)// I believe that hands-on experience with open source cultivates superior leadership and better understanding.//
22 22
23 -**Why I'm running for election**
24 24
25 -Because I can. I truly believe in the power of engaging individuals, having them step up and take on leadership opportunities, and bringing in fresh perspective. I've been involved with open source since the 80's ~-~- long before the term was coined and OSI became established ~-~- and have been an outspoken advocate since 2001. I saw first hand the power and potential of the open source community. Since making it part of my life, both personally and professionally, it's become a fantastic way to make the world a better place.
22 +**Moving the Open Source Initiative Forward**
26 26
27 -I would like to serve on the board for selfish and selfless reasons. Collaborating with board and open source community members is a fantastic opportunity to learn, broaden perspective, and observe how our initiatives influence the greater community. More importantly, though, I want to make a difference, directly contribute, help set policy, expand awareness, and encourage adoption of open source.
24 +(% style="font-size: 14px;" %)The OSI needs fresh perspective. By specifically targeting the single largest producer and consumer of software on the planet ~-~- the US federal government ~-~- I will push for an agenda that expands open source adoption by non-commercial players (i.e., government and academia). Government software in particular should be open source by default, not by exception. There are lots of smart and well-connected people affiliated with OSI that want this, but I don't see the energy, sense of community, or focus. There was outstanding noise made a few years ago to rally folks at the first ever OSI community summit in D.C., but there wasn't follow-through or endurance. OSI needs someone to champion the agenda, to be an ambassador that understands the complex issues, to keep moving discussions forward.
28 28
26 +(% style="font-size: 14px;" %)// I believe we can radically change the open source landscape by focusing attention where open source has the most growth potential.//
